The largest American city founded in the 20th century, Las Vegas was established in 1905 with the opening of the San Pedro, Los Angeles and Salt Lake Railroad. It would be 1931 before gambling was legalized in Nevada, the same year construction began on the Hoover Dam. "This is an engineering victory of the first order," President Franklin D. Roosevelt said in his 1935 Hoover Dam dedication speech. "(It's) another great achievement of American resourcefulness, American skill, and determination."
Las Vegas, a vast and rapidly changing landscape of sprawling casinos, thrilling attractions, and luxurious dining and nightlife, has seen unbelievable expansion since it emerged from the desert just over 100 years ago.
The city and its environs are home to some of the most spectacular displays of engineering you'll ever see:
- What required over 3,250,000 cubic yards of concrete, over 200 engineers, and more than 7,000 workers to complete? The Hoover Dam, of course.
- Just 1,500 feet south of the Hoover Dam, the construction of the Colorado River Bridge (Hoover Bypass Project) was completed last year and opened for public use. This 2,000 foot long bridge will connect the Arizona and Nevada Approach highways nearly 900 feet above the Colorado River.
- To complete your Hoover Dam experience, take a ride on the Nevada Southern Railway. This historic train was built in 1931 as a spur line off the main Union Pacific tracks to haul construction supplies for the Boulder Canyon Project, later renamed the Hoover Dam.
